The people who come to our firm often have different reasons for being here. Some are preparing for a new child. Others are starting a business, thinking about retirement, or finally revisiting plans they made years ago.

But all of our clients have one thing in common: something worth protecting.

That is the idea behind Contego.

Our name comes from contegō, a Latin verb whose most literal meaning is “I cover.” Its root, tegō, carries the idea of covering or sheltering, and ancient writers used forms of contego to describe everything from a roof over a home to a shield held over someone’s head.

One example appears in Julius Caesar’s account of the Roman civil war more than 2,000 years ago. He describes fishing boats fitted with protective coverings so the people rowing beneath them would be sheltered from incoming weapons. The verb he uses is a form of contego. The covering served a purpose: keeping the people underneath it safe.

The word also extended beyond physical shelter. The Roman historian Tacitus used it to describe people protected by the loyalty of others. Across those uses, the word connects something tangible, a covering or a shield, with something deeply human: the need for safety, care, and someone to depend on.

For us, that meaning has a practical connection to the work we do every day.

An estate plan can give a parent a way to provide for a child long after that parent is gone. A carefully drafted business agreement can protect a relationship that began with a handshake. Asset protection and tax planning can help preserve the results of years of hard work.

Each involves legal decisions, but the reasons behind those decisions are personal.

A business may represent someone’s independence, their family’s income, and a future they hope to pass on. A home may be both a financial asset and the place their children grew up. Understanding those connections helps us give advice that fits the person making the decision.

The idea of sheltering something also carries a sense of care. We protect things because they matter to us. Behind the decision to make a will, form a company, or plan for retirement is often the same desire: to take care of the people and responsibilities we hold closest.

That gives our different areas of practice a shared purpose. Estate planning, business law, asset protection, and tax planning each offer ways to preserve something valuable and give it a future. Our role is to help clients make those choices thoughtfully, with an understanding of what is at stake for them.

Preservation, another meaning carried by contego, is an equally important part of that purpose. So much of what our clients bring to us has taken years to build. We want their planning to honor that effort and support what they hope it will make possible for themselves and their families.

Our name reminds us of the responsibility that comes with this work. When people ask us to help protect their families and businesses, they are placing a great deal of trust in us. We aim to earn that trust through the advice we give, the care we take, and the relationships we build along the way.

If you’ve been meaning to put a plan in place for your family or business, we’d love to help. Contact Contego today to schedule a free consultation and start protecting what means most to you.
